Bletchley and Fenny Stratford

The towns of Bletchley and Fenny Stratford are situated south of Milton Keynes. Both towns have residential and industrial areas and shopping and leisure facilities.

The town of Bletchley dates back to Roman times. It was recorded as a town in 1108 and Fenny Stratford is first recorded in 1252. Fenny Stratford grew quicker than Bletchley as it had a coach station on Watling Road - a Roman Road that runs from London to Chester. Fenny Stratford also became a centre for industry as it was situated on the Grand Junction canal - now the Grand Union Canal.Bletchley grew with the opening of the London to Birmingham railway and with the addition of the Bletchley to Bedford line some years later.In 1938 the government acquired Bletchley Park (pictured above), which became the centre of decoding activities during World War II. It is claimed that the work done at Bletchley Park helped shorten the war by three years. The park was also home to the world's first computer Colossus. Today the park is a museum.
