Stony Stratford

Stony Stratford is a busy market town situated north west of Milton Keynes. Pictured below is the village green, the site for the annual Folk on the Green music festival.
Rich with history, Stony Stratford claims that two of its coaching Inns, which are still there today, gave rise to the phrase 'a cock and bull story'. The town's colourful history includes Queen Boudicca and her Iceni tribe battling along the section of Watling Street on which the town stands. King Edward 4th used Stony Stratford as a weekend retreat and married local girl Elizabeth Woodville. At least eight other monarchs have visited Stony Stratford and in 1483 the Duke of Gloucester (who became Richard 3rd) detained the uncrowned Prince Edward in a inn on the High Street before Edward was sent to the Tower of London.Other famous names to have stayed in Stony Stratford include Charles Dickens, Samuel Johnson and John Wesley.
