Hen and stag nights

Hen nights send a wave of terror and paranoia through most brides-to-be. Thoughts of cruel pranks, outrageous behaviour and over self-indulgence can prompt many young maidens to call the whole thing off - especially if they spot their friends plotting secretively in the corner.

But hen parties do not have to turn into a riotous night out.

With plenty of planning, they can become relaxing weekends away or action-packed days out. Not everyone wants to crawl from pub to pub with a decorated veil attached to their heads, so here are a few ideas for those who want something a little different:

• Drift along a canal with a glass of wine and a bunch of pals.

• For those who prefer to relax and be pampered, book yourselves into a health farm for a few days or take your pals and have a day of beauty treatments and a sauna.

• Grab your rucksacks and tents and head for a camping weekend in the Lake District or Yorkshire Dales. It's not only fun but cheap – just don't forget the tin opener.

• For a more cultured evening, book a box at the theatre and a table at your favourite restaurant.

• Take your friends away for a murder-mystery weekend, which combines intrigue with lashings of fun and food.

Stag nights can be even worse - how many men have woken up from a drunken coma to find themselves naked and tied to a lamp-post near Brighton Pier? Again, however, many men are anxious to steer away from the traditional alcoholic frenzy and enjoy a night, weekend or even week to remember. They are waking up to a whole array of stag night opportunities that don't involve 18 pubs, Amsterdam or a kebab. Here are some ideas for the more adventurous man.

• Take your pals on an activity weekend - daredevils can go whitewater rafting, jet skiing, kayaking, ballooning, quad biking and even hang gliding.

Go to Barcelona for a long weekend and indulge in some stylish Spanish culture

Explore the Lake District and enjoy some leisurely fun – go for long walks, cycling or take a boat on one of the stunning lakes

Paint-balling is still a popular activity and loads of fun - followed, of course, by the obligatory pint (or several) in the pub!
